Yet another highlight of the Nintendo Indie World showcase today was the new glimpse at Baldo from Italian developer Naps Team. This action adventure RPG with puzzle elements and a beautiful art style tries to combine Zelda with Studio Ghibli, and so far, so good on that front. The game has actually been in development for a few years, but Indie World gave us a healthy reminder it exists. It also revealed that Baldo will be a timed console exclusive on Nintendo Switch when it releases this summer.
Its new trailer really warrants admiration for its lush and expressive visuals.
Baldo is both promising “intricate dungeons to solve” and also an open world, suggesting that it will be borrowing from Breath of the Wild in equal proportion to any other Zelda title. That’s pretty intriguing by itself. But once you factor in the creative character designs and the general beauty of the environments, you start to have something that may rise above the rest of the indie crop. We will have to keep an eye out for Naps Team’s Baldo this summer.
For more beautiful games being developed for Nintendo Switch right now, there is also Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, whose two-man development team Edelweiss we interviewed last year at E3.
