Blade Strangers is about to get even stranger. The Studio Saizensen and Nicalis mashup fighter bringing a slew of iconic characters together originally launched back in 2018 with 14 fighters to choose from. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the game, the Japanese publisher of Blade Strangers has announced that three new combatants are joining the arena soon: Aban Hawkins from 1001 Spikes, a new version of Umihara Kawase, and Piaa from Doki Doki Poyatchio.
Aban Hawkins is the dashing not-quite-Indiana Jones protagonist from punishing 2014 platformer 1001 Spikes. He was teased previously by the developer numerous times, so it’s awesome to finally see him joining the game.
The next character is a younger version of iconic fish-grabbing, rope-swinging platformer protagonist Umihara Kawase. And lastly, Piaa is a bit of a deeper pull, coming from the retro Japanese game Doki Doki Poyatchio.
If you haven’t played Doki Doki Poyatchio, you’re forgiven. It was a PlayStation game that never left Japan and boasted sharp character designs from Toshinobu Kondo. When an evil empire attacked their town, Raidou had to return to help his cousin manage their bakery. Piaa is one of the bachelorettes Raidou was able to potentially date in the game.
An exact date for the Blade Strangers update has yet to be revealed. The game originally launched in North America and Europe on Aug. 28, 2018 and in Japan on Aug. 30, 2018, so it could possibly arrive as early as this week.
