Blasphemous: The Stir of Dawn launches for Nintendo Switch today. This is the first DLC expansion for Blasphemous, and it’s free! The Stir of Dawn brings new gameplay challenges in the form of Penitences, the True Torment New Game+ mode, and five new bosses via the malevolent Amanecidas.
Blasphemous: The Stir of Dawn will make use of a redesigned map system that also includes new sites to discover. There are additionally more voice-overs, new executions, and even brand new items to get to grips with.
In True Torment, players may choose from three Penitences that will drastically change the game:
- Unwavering Faith – This Penitence is designed for magic users. Fervor will regenerate over time so that you can make the most of special moves. However, sword damage is cut in half.
- Bleeding Heart – With this Penitence you’ll get a classic, Castlevania-flavored gameplay experience. Health is replaced by stocks. Each hit will remove a single stock, as opposed to varying levels of health. Additionally, enemies will respawn every time you enter a room. Good luck.
- True Guilt – The final Penitence will cause The Penitent One to lose maximum fervor upon death. At this point, your in-game currency, Tears of Atonement, is placed in a fragment. If you fail to retrieve these, they’re gone. This is an incredibly punishing Penitence, and it doesn’t stop there. All health flasks add fervor, not health, so essentially healing is removed from the game.
In addition to making the game more punishing, The Stir of Dawn also balances Blasphemous out. The counterattack mechanic has seen some improvement, allowing for a better flow to combat. Enemies have also been adjusted to make them slightly less punishing, unless you’re playing in True Torment mode.
Overall this looks like a really meaningful DLC update for Blasphemous, one that all players should enjoy. If you’ve never jumped into the game before, now is the perfect time to do so.
