Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is one of the biggest Kickstarter success stories of all time. When Konami decided that Castlevania games just weren’t worth it anymore, producer Koji Igarashi struck out on his own. Iga knew there was still a market for the genre, and he proved it by raising over $5 million. Years later, his passion project is finally out (except on Switch), but you should be careful when booting it up! Following player reports, the dev team has confirmed a game-breaking bug.
A game-breaking bug
Like many games, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has an update ready to download shortly after launch. The 1.02 update is meant to fix some issues, but it also introduces a pretty big one under certain circumstances. If you start a save file before updating, then update later, you may find yourself unable to progress. Some players are reporting that certain chests are inaccessible post-patch. Since these chests can contain items you need to beat the game, that’s a pretty big problem.
Unfortunately, there’s currently no way to fix this issue without starting over. Thankfully, it can be pretty easily avoided. If you pick up Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, just make sure you download the update right away before starting. When the Switch version launches on June 25, you’ll also need to download this update if you buy the game physically. Publisher 505 Games doesn’t mention the digital version on Switch, so it’s possible that the patch will be included in the initial download. We’d advise you to keep an eye on it just in case! On Xbox, this is update 1.00x, and the same rule applies. It’s frustrating to deal with a game-breaking bug right out of the gate, but at least it can be sidestepped with ease.
