Bubsy Paws on Fire Switch

It’s hard to tell whether Bubsy is more like a bobcat or a cockroach. Despite the character’s lack of relevancy and positively received titles for over 20 years, he keeps coming back for more. And now it looks like he’s returning with the announced Bubsy: Paws on Fire. Liar liar we are not.

Before last year’s release of Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, there hadn’t been a new game in the franchise for 21 years. The title before it was the infamous Bubsy 3D. Despite that seemingly being the end of the bodacious bobcat, Black Forest Games came out with The Woolies Strike Back to largely negative reviews. Accolade, a brand revival of the original company behind the early games, helped bring the bobcat back last year. Now they announce Bubsy: Paws on Fire, but this time they’re bringing a more accomplished developer on board.

Run, Bubsy, Run

As the trailer reveals, Choice Provisions will be bringing their own vision for a Bubsy game. They are known for the auto-running rhythmic platformer series Bit.Trip Runner. Their latest release, Runner3, came out for Switch earlier this year. Now they hope to implement a similar type of gameplay to Paws on Fire.

Expected to release some time next year, Bubsy: Paws on Fire will have auto-running platforming as well as scrolling shooter sections. Not only that, we see a behind-the-back running section where Bubsy must collect gems and avoid… umm…. fart bags. Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog will instantly pick up the influence there (not the fart bags).

Accolade themselves have even boasted some impressive features. This includes four playable characters, over 100 levels, unlockable costumes, and the return of pretty much every character in the Bubsy franchise. Even Virgil Reality, a character who only appeared in the Bubsy cartoon pilot, is here. Now that’s dedication for the fans!

Bubsy makes unlikely return with 'Paws on Fire' for Switch

Seeing another Bubsy game get announced almost feels like a cruel joke. We haven’t seen a new Castlevania or Contra game in ages (not to pick on Konami), yet we get this. Still, I can’t deny that this is actually looking good so far. Choice Provisions is an established studio that knows what they’re doing in this genre. The Bubsy license is just icing on the cake. We’ll be keeping an eye out for Bubsy: Paws on Fire when it releases in 2019.
