Developer Subliminal Gaming in partnership with WINGS Interactive will launch narrative-driven adventure Button City on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC with a release date of August 10, 2021, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions to follow later. The game is ridiculously adorable with its quirky chibi characters and bright low-poly visuals, and the story is about Fennel the fox moving to Button City with his mom and befriending the Fluff Squad, a bunch of arcade-loving kids. Together, “they spend a memorable week competing against rival teams while also hatching schemes to save their beloved hangout from Peppermint Pepperbottom, a greedy fat cat who puts profits over people.” I love everything about this.
Due to its arcade backdrop, Button City will not fall neatly into one genre on Nintendo Switch either. Indeed, the Button City release date announcement trailer shows off several genres, like a racing game and “Gobabots, a 4v4 action game that rewards the top team with a spectacular prize.” You will also be solving puzzles, making friends, and collecting new outfits, which gives off a slight Animal Crossing vibe.
Button City looks both unique and utterly precious, and I think I’m going to have to play it on Switch. If you’re interested in more games with a charming low-poly aesthetic, check out Frogun, Haven Park, and Say No! More.
