Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions story trailer highlights anime soccer drama

When Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions was revealed a few weeks ago, we were excited for an arcade-style soccer title to fill a Super Mario Strikers void. Now, thanks to a new trailer from developer Bandai Namco, we now know what to expect from its over-the-top story mode.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is the latest video game based on the classic anime/manga Captain Tsubasa, which became very popular in Mexico, the Middle East, and of course Japan. The story follows a young boy named Tsubasa Oozora who grows alongside his friends as he becomes one of the greatest soccer players in the world. The soccer matches are larger than life, being portrayed as exciting and dramatic with implausible moves and techniques. You can see this in all its video game glory in the trailer below.

It’s evident from the trailer that this is a lovingly crafted passion project. (After all, it took almost five years to get the game greenlit.) There are familiar characters such as Tsubasa’s mentor Roberto Hongo and rival Kojiro Hyuga. With dramatic monologues and insane special moves, Captain Tsubasa has the opportunity to be a standout sports title when it releases on the Switch in 2020.
