The Nintendo community is no stranger to rumors and leaks. Even more so, it’s no stranger to elaborately faked rumors and leaks. Just going back to the NX days brings back unsettling memories…Remember that fake NX controller? Man, oh man, was that an interesting situation. Well, it looks like we just might have something new to add to the collection of impressive fake leaks. This time, it has to deal with, of all things, a firmware update for the Switch. Not just any run-of-the-mill ‘stability update’ either—we’re talking a very big enhancement to the Switch’s operating system.

Recently, a video was uploaded which shows off the supposed beta version of the Switch 5.0 firmware. It features all-new things like an Internet Browser, online lounge, system-based voice chat (no crazy app!),  folders for the HOME Menu and cloud-saving. Even multimedia apps like Twitch and YouTube are shown. It’s because of all this that the rumor has been quickly circulated; these are all features that have been heavily requested by Switch users ever since the system launched back in March. While there have been system updates throughout 2017, the majority of them have been rather minor. The largest update yet has been version 4.0 which added features like video capture.  Now, what about this alleged 5.0 update?

As convincing as the video looks, eagle-eyed viewers pointed out a few discrepancies not too long after it was originally uploaded which damaged its credibility. The biggest issue being that the file size of Mario Kart 8 shown in the video is much lower than the actual size. Some have pointed out that this could be due to the game either being archived or the fact that incorrect data is being displayed due to this allegedly being a beta version of the firmware. Still, a rumor is a rumor after all, and the current outcome of the situation is exactly what you’d expect. Unsurprisingly, as quickly as the video appeared, it was taken down by the original uploader. But, as we all know YouTube is famous for reuploads and that’s exactly what’s happened this time around. So, check out this re-upload of the video from YouTube channel ‘Nintendo Switch Brazil’:

As mentioned before, there have been very elaborate fakes in the past. Hence, it’s hard to trust a video like this. But, at the same time, this is incredibly convincing. Ultimately, we’ll have just have to wait and find out exactly whether or not this was an actual leak or just the work of a very good video editor. On the topic of rumors, a new Nintendo Direct has been heavily rumored to be releasing this month.

Considering that this video mentioned that this alleged system update would be coming out in early February, then there is a bit of a chance that these two rumors could end up in a merged confirmation. If a Nintendo Direct really does air later this month, then it just might include an official announcement of a new system update for the Switch, which could turn out to be exactly what this video showed. This, of course, would be a very exciting outcome, but then again this could all also be one big batch of snake oil. Ultimately, only time will tell.
