You know what’s a huge hit with the adults these days? Nostalgia and memes. Also, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII for some reason. So imagine a video that activates all your gaming memories from the late ’90s, especially the ones involving Super Mario 64 and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. If you’ve done that, then maybe you’ve come close to the genius of this masterpiece by Twitter user hachikosyndrome:

Ok, so there’s a lot to unpack here. First, we’ve got Cloud, skateboarding (snowboarding?) and grinding all over. Second, it’s happening on Bob-omb Battlefield from Super Mario 64. Third, we’ve got a jazz remix of “Still More Fighting/Those Who Fight Further,” a boss battle theme from Final Fantasy VII. Fourth, Cloud is scoring a ton of points in a system ripped straight out of the Tony Hawk games. Lastly, that’s no board — that’s Soul Edge from Soul Edge (and later Soulcalibur).
Matches made in heaven
I have to admit — this video is absolutely bonkers and made my night. The creative forces at play here, mixing some of the biggest gaming phenomena of that early era of 3D gaming, are astounding. And yet, the craziest thing is that all of these things coming together in one game is no longer a (Final) fantasy!
Cloud is in the Super Smash Bros. series along with the likes of Mario, and Final Fantasy VII is available on Nintendo Switch, a fact that still boggles my mind — and I’ve seen Sonic games made specifically for Nintendo systems. Smash is developed in part by Namco, creators of the Soulcalibur games, many of which have also appeared on Nintendo consoles. Souldcalibur II even featured Link as a playable fighter.
All said, this fever dream of a Twitter video blew my 13-year-old self’s mind, and for that, I salute you, @hachikosyndrome.
