COGEN: Sword of Rewind trailer Gemdrops Unity Technologies Japan 2D sidescroller anime Gunvolt Mega Man Zero Nintendo Switch

If you like Inti Creates’ Azure Striker Gunvolt or Mega Man Zero, then you may be in for a treat. Developer Gemdrops has revealed a trailer for COGEN: Sword of Rewind, a 2D sidescroller with an anime aesthetic coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam this year. It will feature language options for English, Japanese, Chinese Traditional and Simplified, and Korean. And composer Motoi Sakuraba, who has composed for myriad franchises like Tales, Star Ocean, and Dark Souls, is performing the music here as well.

Per Gematsu translation, the COGEN: Sword of Rewind website offers the following brief game description:

A new sensation sword-fighting action game where immediate death is the strongest weapon.

Set on Earth in the far future, you will control the heroine Kohaku and solve the mysteries of Cogen City.

Using the “Ouroboros System,” which activates at the moment of immediate death, you can go back in time and fight without the fear of failure!

Watch the trailer to get an idea for what this Ouroboros System entails.

In essence, it seems that getting hit at all in COGEN: Sword of Rewind means instant death, but you have a meter with three bars that can rewind time each time that you get hit. The meter seems to regenerate by itself slowly, so you just have to be sure to get hit sparingly and not lose all your meter. Personally, I think this is a really fresh and cool system, so I wish Gemdrops the best with this game’s development.

What do you think of this game, and do its Gunvolt vibes appeal to you?
