Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend release date Square Enix Nintendo Switch Game Boy

This is a morning of revelations. Firstly, a new Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase dropped — two days ahead of the rumored Friday date. Secondly, out of absolutely nowhere, Square Enix has announced Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend on Nintendo Switch. It is a collection of the three Final Fantasy Legend titles for the original Game Boy, released in North America between 1990 and 1993. Incidentally — and as the name of the collection suggests — these were actually the three original games in the SaGa franchise, which went on to include the likes of Romancing SaGa on Super Famicom and SaGa Frontier on PlayStation 1.

The reveal of Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend is cued up below.

While it’s largely an “older” crowd of gamers who remembers The Final Fantasy Legend and its two sequels these days, their financial impact on Square back in the early Game Boy era cannot be understated. Chiefly, The Final Fantasy Legend was the first Square game to sell over 1 million copies, which was naturally a huge deal.

Granted, some of the mechanics in these games even back in 1990 were considered pretty obtuse, (What the heck is the deal with “meat”?) and they’re only going to look more bizarre by today’s standards. Fortunately, GameFAQs is a thing now! Also, this new collection will incorporate a “high-speed mode,” adjustable screen magnification, customizable screen backgrounds, and some new commemorative music and illustrations.

Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend will launch on Nintendo Switch on Dec. 15 for $19.99 and is available for preorder. Fingers crossed that an announcement from Square Enix involving Live A Live isn’t too far off.
