The last new mainline Donkey Kong Country title, Tropical Freeze, launched back in 2014 on Wii U. In that case, you’d hope that we might be due another sometime soon. Well, any Donkey Kong Country projects may be a ways off yet. Nonetheless, the composer on Tropical Freeze, David Wise, said that he’d “be delighted to be involved again if ever the opportunity were to come up in the future.”
Wise shared this in an interview with ComicBook.com, where he spoke of his experience working with Nintendo. Aside from stating his desire to work on future projects, Wise also spoke of the creative freedoms, and restrictions, from working with Nintendo on Donkey Kong Country:
There is always welcome guidance from Nintendo. There is also a huge amount of freedom and creative expression. I have consistently found that Nintendo are very happy to let creativity breathe and flourish, especially for first drafts, and then possibly suggest changes or give ideas to reflect the development of the rest of the game.
Wise’s response does read as if he has no awareness of upcoming Donkey Kong Country projects. If nothing is currently in development it makes sense, as Tropic Freeze developer Retro Studios is still working away on Metroid Prime 4. Maybe once that has come and gone, work will begin on a new Donkey Kong title? Only time will tell. In any case, hopefully David Wise will be part of it.
