Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a cult classic with its sense of humor, variety of weapons and enemies, and exciting top-down co-op action gameplay. Developer Tuned-Out Games, with the support of HumaNature Studios‘ Greg Johnson, is aiming to revive that style of gameplay with an extremely similarly named experience, Demons Ate My Neighbors!, which will put a twin-stick roguelite spin on the formula on at least Nintendo Switch and PC.
The premise of the game is a cursed VHS tape has turned Fairweather Valley into “a den of horrors,” ruining April and Joey’s relaxing summer. Now it’s up to them to use squirt guns filled with holy water to save everyone, while also battling creatures inspired by classic horror films.
A distinguishing mechanic of Demons Ate My Neighbors! is you can “damn” or “deliver” citizens and bosses with lethal or non-lethal weapons, which will subsequently affect the paths and equipment that are available to you. Additionally, April and Joey come equipped with the “RadWatch,” which can be leveled up through defeating enemies to increase your ability to locate survivors in levels.
To round out the experience, Demons Ate My Neighbors! will have a soundtrack provided by Sonic Mania veteran Tee Lopes, Varien, Nice Legs, and Papoose & Remy Ma.
Demons Ate My Neighbors! is aiming to launch on Nintendo Switch and PC in fall 2021. However, it will also be heading to Kickstarter on Sept. 1, 2020 for additional funding, as “Tuned-Out Games hopes to raise $175,000 to add more levels, monsters, and other terrors.” Kickstarter stretch goals will include offering PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X ports, online co-op, and other, smaller additions like more weapons.
If you ever loved Zombies Ate My Neighbors and you’re one of the eight people on Earth who isn’t completely sick of roguelites / roguelikes, this game is basically your destiny.
