If you are unaware, Yoshi’s Crafted World is a gorgeous game that leaves one with a continuous smile while playing. The co-op mode is wonderful; gamers can play with their children, friends, or partners without worrying about a huge difficulty curve. In other words, it’s a super chill video game. Recently, the title’s assistant producer, Nobuo Matsumiya, shared his opinion regarding the lack of hardcore stress in Yoshi’s Crafted World.
Not every game has to be Dark Souls
Speaking with the publication Nintendo Dream, Matsumiya had the following back and forth with an interviewer:
How difficult did you make the game?
Matsumiya: Because we want people to enjoy the Yoshi world we have created, we were aiming for a difficulty that allows players to have fun. Even though the game is designed around collecting flowers in order to advance to the next area, within each course it’s not only about the flowers but also the Poochy puppies on the reverse side, as well as finding all those crafting materials. That means players can play the levels over and over to collect everything.
But finding everything is a challenge in itself.
Matsumiya: That’s right. That’s why we have also added the Mellow Mode (where Yoshi can use wings to fly around the stage and takes less damage) and the ability to change the difficulty. While there may be some players wanting the same play challenge as Yoshi’s Island, I think there may also be players who want to enjoy the world but find the gameplay bewildering. Because of that, we thought about how we could help out those using the more casual Yoshi. So, for example we have a notification sound play when those players are close to flowers as a hint until they find it, so that we aren’t taking away that excitement of discovery.”

I agree with Matsumiya’s assessment of Yoshi’s Crafted World. Video games should be accessible to both the casual and hardcore audience. I’ll admit, I used to have backward views regarding this very subject. The (ENTIRELY OPTIONAL) White Tanooki Mario used to elicit a scoff from me because I regarded it as a crutch for gamers who were not good enough to learn the game’s mechanics. It wasn’t until I met my partner that I realized how much of a jerk I was being. Just because I do not want to use such an ability does not mean it isn’t valuable to someone else. Not everyone is HARDCORE.
In addition, Yoshi’s Crafted World is overflowing with content. As Matsumiya mentions, the title’s fun comes from scanning each level’s environments and obtaining all collectibles in order to achieve 100 percent completion. This is a joy to accomplish, especially if you have an extra pair of eyes playing alongside you. However, it’s important to remember not to get too hung up on acquiring that bonus during an initial level run-through. Getting impatient with your co-op buddy, as I have done, destroys the inherent joy for which Yoshi’s Crafted World was made. Just relax and play!
