Direct messages come to Switch in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing fans rejoice! The long-awaited entry in the life simulation series had its very own Direct this morning, and boy was there a lot of news. Nintendo is fully supporting the game via free updates. Designs you’ve made in previous games can be scanned and uploaded to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. You can collect friends and go fishing and pay off debts! And one cool feature that’s been missing from the Nintendo Switch in general is coming to the new AC game as well — direct messages.

Using the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app, you can use the voice chat function that’s built in to type out words for you, or you can outright type out a direct message. In either case, it will put words in your villager’s mouth in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This will work when you’re visiting other people’s islands online and makes for a much more versatile communication method than we normally see in Nintendo games.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes out on March 20, 2020. The direct messages and voice chat features will arrive shortly after that.

Will you be getting Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Excited for the possibilities granted by direct messages and voice chat? Will you be haunting your friends’ islands with the mad gibberish of lost souls? Let us know!

You can see the relevant section about messages at 16:00 in the video below.
