Nintendo Switch review Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! Serenity Forge Team Salvato

If you’ve never experienced the joy that is Doki Doki Literature Club, you’re really missing out on one heck of a game. Luckily, an enhanced edition of the title, titled Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!, is coming out on Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, Steam, and Epic Games Store on June 30th! The game will be available both digitally and in a special edition physical bundle for those who want a bit of extra goodness to go with it.

Without spoiling too much, Doki Doki Literature Club provides a unique twist on dating sim visual novels. You play as a normal school boy who gets roped into joining your school’s literature club, alongside your best friend Sayori, and other club members Natsuki, Yuri, and the club’s president, Monika. As the days progress, you write poetry to share among the club members, which allows you to grow closer to specific members, based on the words you choose for your poems. However, as the school’s festival approaches, you start to realize something isn’t quite right. From here, things take a drastic and darker twist into the realm of psychological horror. Let’s just say the game earns its M rating and those content warnings at the beginning.

On top of the already fantastic base game, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! features a ton of new content even existing fans are sure to enjoy. The main chunk of new content comes in the form of six Side Stories. These stories are set outside of the timeline of the main game and focus on each pair of characters in order to show how their friendship developed. Thirteen new songs are also being added to the soundtrack (doubling its size!), including songs from the Side Stories content and a few guest tracks from Jason Hayes (lead composer for the original release of World of Warcraft). Lastly, there are over 100 pictures to unlock, including game art, never-before-seen sketches, and much more!

The digital version of Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! will set you back $14.99, but if you want the physical edition and all its extras, it’ll cost $29.99. For this price, you not only get a physical copy of the game, but also a set of 4 2″ character standees, a download code for the full soundtrack on a floppy disc-shaped card, a set of 17 stickers, a Doki Doki Literature Club membership card, and an exclusive special poem written by Monika. Further, as a Switch-exclusive bonus, you get a poem notebook on the inner cover sheet! Pre-orders for the physical version are open now on Serenity Forge, though this is only available for Switch and the PlayStation versions.

As a massive Doki Doki Literature Club fan, I’m extremely excited to see what all has been added to the game in this updated version. It’s an experience unlike anything I’ve ever played before, and I highly encourage you to check the game out if you’ve never tried it. Thankfully, we don’t have too much longer to wait, as June 30th will be here before we know it!
