Donkey Kong Country

For better or for worse, Virtual Console has fallen victim to Nintendo Switch Online’s subscription-based approach to delivering retro Nintendo content on Switch. Once you’re actually playing the games, the service and its myriad faults is a little less egregious, but that’s a discussion for another time. Between the NES and SNES apps on the Switch, which retro game have you spent the most time with?

I haven’t seen more than a few hours in any title thus far – that’ll change when and if Nintendo 64 games make it over – so Donkey Kong Country is the winner thus far. That’s solely because I’ve played a solid chunk of levels while revisiting the game. There are definitely potential SNES additions that could take that crown before long, though. If something like Earthbound showed up, I’d get sucked into that pretty much immediately, and I have a The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past playthrough in its opening stages. For now, though, Donkey Kong Country takes the cake. It’s a pretty worthy king if you ask me. It kicked off one of the best trilogies in its entire genre, after all.

What NES or SNES title have you spent the most time with on Switch? What’s number one on your retro wishlist for future game updates? Let us know in the comments below.
