Ubisoft opened up its press conference earlier today with the familiar franchise Just Dance. When the performance ended, Ubisoft announced that, as expected, Just Dance 2017 would launch for the Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U. However, in a move that surprised most of us, Ubisoft muttered the words of Nintendo’s secretive new console: the Nintendo NX. The company is bringing its latest dance title “even to the NX.”
A gasp ran through the room, people were somewhat impressed. After all, a third party had confirmed just as many games as Nintendo had for the new console. This had to be good news, right?
As Ubisoft ran through their games however, the company never muttered the two-word combination again. Their games were announced regularly for Xbox, Playstation, and PC — but, NX was nowhere to be seen or heard. For some reason, the company felt comfortable enough announcing one game for the console, why not more?
Perhaps, because there are no more titles in development for the NX than Just Dance.
If this is true, then the message Ubisoft sent today was very clear: Nintendo still has yet to win the trust of third-party publishers. At this point, all indications point to the fact that Nintendo has yet to make any changes to make third-party relations on NX any better than on the Wii U.
Some may seem skeptical of this idea, but think for just a moment. Why else would Ubisoft choose to announce just this game for the NX?
Perhaps Ubisoft was not allowed to reveal any games that would let us know more about the NX than Nintendo wants us to know? In that case, Just Dance would be the worst title to announce, because we found out the NX will support motion control, which is a pretty big feature.
Was there some sort of contractual clause between Ubisoft and Nintendo that only allowed them to announce Just Dance?
Perhaps, but what would be the benefit of revealing Just Dance as an NX game instead of waiting? We still do not know what the console is, and more importantly, Ubisoft has no way of marketing the NX version of the game.
Even the newest Ghost Recon game, Ghost Recon Wildlands, an Ubisoft game scheduled for March, the same month as the NX, was not announced for the console.
Take all this information as you like, but one fact stands before us today. Ubisoft announced a brand new title today for the NX, but it was not Ghost Recon, Watch Dogs, or even the smaller title Grow Up. The company announced Just Dance, the same game that has come religiously to Wii U every single year without fail.
How else could you interpret that?
