I make no secret of how much I love Shmuplations, a website whose owner translates Japanese game development interviews and related materials into English. This time, the site has really outdone itself, translating an entire 48-minute Dragon Quest 30th anniversary TV special from Dec. 29, 2016, which aired on NHK (otherwise known as the Japan Broadcasting Corporation). Shmuplations describes the video with this:
This documentary special, featuring interviews with main Dragon Quest creators Yuji Horii, Koichi Nakamura, Akira Toriyama, and Koichi Sugiyama, originally aired on NHK at the end of 2016 to celebrate Dragon Quest’s 30th anniversary. In addition to the interviews, there’s behind the scenes footage of DQXI, plus a re-telling of the making of the very first Dragon Quest.
Yep, this video includes all the major creative forces of the Dragon Quest series, even roping in Dragon Ball creator Toriyama. This sounds like a spectacular video for a nerd (like me) to unwind with late at night. However, I hear there are some spoilers for the series in there (not for XI though, as the game hadn’t released yet), so tread lightly.
I haven’t had the time to watch the whole Dragon Quest 30th anniversary show yet, but I will be soon enough! And you should too — just remember to turn captions on and enjoy. Then ponder the fact that Shmuplations has a Patreon to support further translations, if you have money burning a hole in your pocket.
