Back in June 2019, Dragon Quest series executive producer Yuu Miyake revealed that he and series creator Yuji Horii were “making preparations on series developments that will connect to XII.” Now, in a New Year’s message to fans, Horii casually lists “the production of [DQ]12” among the big series developments that occurred in 2019, effectively confirming that real work on Dragon Quest XII has begun.
Japanese Nintendo provides the translation of Horii’s words, where he says, among other things: “… even now after 33 years have passed since I made the 1st game, I feel very glad that I can do new challenges like these. Thank you very much to all users who have cheered on Dragon Quest until now, and also to all of the many staff members who have supported me. I don’t know how long I can go on, but I feel like I want to do my best just a little bit more.”
Dragon Quest XII was ultimately only a blip on the radar of all the things related to the series that occurred in 2019, since Dragon Quest XI S released on Nintendo Switch, helping to bring XI‘s total game copies shipped to 5.5 million. Japan also received mobile Pokémon GO-esque title Dragon Quest Walk, which received one of the most amazing trailers for anything I’ve ever seen in my life. Japan additionally received a film based on Dragon Quest V called Dragon Quest: Your Story, which I hope and pray will receive western release someday.
There continues to be no hint of what platforms Dragon Quest XII will land on, but PlayStation 5 seems like a safe bet. It’s hard to say if this will come to Nintendo Switch, but perhaps if there were… a “Switch Pro”?
