Dragon Quest: Your Story Netflix film international release Square Enix

The film Dragon Quest: Your Story, based on Square Enix’s Dragon Quest V for Super Famicom, released in Japan last August following a couple of the most epic trailers for any movie or video game I’ve ever seen. Since then, there’s been no word on an international release — until now. A page for Dragon Quest: Your Story has emerged out of the nether on Netflix for the U.S. and some other countries, including at least Australia and Mexico. It is marked as a “Netflix film,” implying it will be exclusive to the platform in the regions where it releases.

The short description for the film on Netflix reads as follows: “Lucas follows in his father’s footsteps to rescue his mother from evil Ladja. Finding the heavenly hero who wields the Zenithian sword is his only hope.” No release date is provided, but heck, I’m patient. The fact that this seems to be happening at all is spectacular news to me.

The film reportedly faced some criticism in Japan over its plot decisions, apparently especially in the third act of the film. We’re staying spoiler-free here, so whatever odd decisions the film studio may have arrived at with Square Enix, we’ll find out about them soon enough when Dragon Quest: Your Story comes to Netflix!
