The game is the third entry from the EDF series that was released for the Xbox 360 in December 2006. The localized title, Earth Defense Force 2017, arrived in North America and Europe in March 2007. The third-person shooter made its way to PlayStation Vita in September 2012.

Earth Defense Force 2017 is a follow-up title to Global Defence Force. It is based on D3 Publisher’s budget game Simple 2000 Series title. The game offers 171 weapons and 53 stages. Players take on the role of Storm 1, a top-class soldier from the Earth Defense Force. The Nintendo Switch version of Earth Defense Force 3 will feature the local and online co-op introduced in the PS Vita version.
