We reported back in April of this year Nintendo’s intention to bring Earthbound (A.K.A. Mother 2) to the NA and EU Wii U eShop Virtual Console service by the end of the year.

Today Nintendo announced through a mini Nintendo Direct that Earthbound is indeed finally available to purchase and download for $10.

Furthermore, The strategy guide that originally accompanied the SNES release of the game is being completely recreated for access on the Earthbound website, and is optimized for the Wii U Gamepad.

Fans of the series have been waiting for this game to be re-released in some fashion for many years, and after seeing an enormous outpouring of requests on Miiverse, Nintendo acquiesced and began work on the VC release.  Success or failure of this VC release could spell the future for the fate of the series in the form of further eShop releases or entire new entrants into the franchise.  Given the popularity that the title has acquired over the years, there is little doubt it will do well initially and continue to do well over the Wii U’s life cycle.

So now that the game has finally arrived, do you plan on picking it up?  If you\’ve never heard of the series before, do you plan on seeing what all the fuss is about?  Let us know in the comments!
