The Half-Life modding community has grown in the years since half Half-Life 2 launched back in 2004. Typically, these often self-contained stories don’t leave the PC platform, as that’s where game mods thrive. However, a follow-up to Estranged: Act 1 appears to be making its way from PC to Nintendo Switch later this year. Developer Alan Edwardes has teamed up with Game If You Are to release Estranged: The Departure, a self-contained story telling the tale of a lone fisherman whose ship is stranded on a mysterious island during a violent storm. The developer says it can be enjoyed without knowledge of the original mod.
The level design looks fairly open going by released screenshots, following in the footsteps of Half-Life itself. According to the developer, players will “explore a rich, detailed landscape” on their journey, which involves puzzle-solving, first-person combat, and more. If it looks as good to play as it does in the trailer, it could be a visual treat too.
Estranged: The Departure is available now on Steam, costing $5.99, whereas Act 1 was free, being a mod. We’d expect a similar cost of entry on Nintendo Switch, or a little higher, when it launches in Q4 2020. An Xbox One version is also planned to launch at a later date.
