It’s always an exciting time when the release date nears for an anticipated new product, whether it be a game, system, or even movie/TV show. Retailers are aware of that excitement, and some of them see it as a chance to drive some attention into their storefronts by breaking the release date and handing out the new products early. We see this with a lot of games, in particular, with some folks getting copies sometimes as much as a week early. Of course, the creators of the products are never happy when this happens as this could lead to issues, such as leaks.

Nintendo is bringing down the gauntlet on shady retailers over in Europe who have a  history of breaking street dates. The Big N is doing this by shortening the amount of time smaller stores have to order stock before the official release date, to ensure that by the time shipments are delivered, it will be very close to the official date.

This information comes from a report by GamesIndustry, who actually spoke to one small retailer in the UK who isn’t happy with his change in Nintendo’s business strategy because they feel that this could cause shipments to arrive late, thus driving consumers to bigger stores. It’s a shame that some small retailers have to endure a penalty brought on by their more mischevious contemporaries, but Nintendo is just looking at it from a business perspective. Nintendo told GamesIndustry that it is “consistently reviewing its shopping schedule” to keep new releases secure.
