Sonic fan film director reacts to the Sonic the Hedgehog trailer

The Internet has made its thoughts loud and clear on the first movie trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog. Spoiler alert: it’s not all that positive. However, one man knows a thing or two about making a movie of the Sega mascot.

Eddie Lebron, director of the 2013 fan film Sonic, made his own reaction video on YouTube to the much-maligned trailer. He gives his own take of the blue hedgehog’s Hollywood-funded redesign and even points out a very similar shot to his own release.

Eddie can be seen clearly wincing when first seeing Sonic’s face up close. Even the reveal of Jim Carrey’s Robotnik gets a “you gotta be kidding me” out of the filmmaker. But the real sign of pain watching the trailer seems to come when Sonic states that he’s going to have to save our planet. The shaking of his head by the end pretty much sums up the overall reaction.

Gotta Go Blast

After digesting what he just saw, Eddie is left in a state of shock. He brings up how people gave him crap for his movie, how this new film is “not a Sonic movie,” and the difference in setting between the two. Namely, he brings up the fantastical nature needed in a movie like this as opposed to setting it on Earth. The Marvel movies are also mentioned as a way of reinforcing what the brand already is for a mainstream audience. If the Sonic the Hedgehog movie fails, the brand suffers.

The Sonic fan film released 6 years ago garnered a lot of attention and criticism of its own. Much of it revolved around the way Sonic’s fur looked. But at least the technical limitations can be attributed to having a very small budget. Paramount doesn’t have that luxury.

Eddie’s final statements sum up his overall thoughts where he says, “This trailer is the equivalent of being punched while in sleep paralysis.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement.
