masahiro sakurai Fighters Pass Vol. 2 end of new characters Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Per details revealed by Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai in his regular Famitsu column, Fighters Pass Vol. 2 will be the end of new characters being added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. These details have been translated and shared by trusted translator PushDustin. Sakurai further reiterates that the six characters in Fighters Pass Vol. 2 were selected by Nintendo, and since these characters will effectively mark the end of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sakurai wants to ensure he “gives it his all” to make them great content additions.

As Sakurai explains per PushDustin, the future of Super Smash Bros. past the end of Ultimate is uncertain, as there are no current plans for a new title. Sakurai additionally said, “I can’t say for sure if the Smash series will continue. The people at Nintendo who are in charge of the series and I are not thinking about the future at all. It’s not really good for the long-term future (of the series) to just add new content (to Ultimate). But by putting out a little bit at a time, we can make (Ultimate) last longer.”

To think that this series could end here after Fighters Pass Vol. 2 would be absurd, as Nintendo enjoys making money as much as any other company, and this title has sold extraordinarily well at over 17 million units. It would be nice if Masahiro Sakurai were actually given some free time to, like, live and breathe for a while though. The man has earned more than a short rest, though ongoing DLC development has likely been much less intensive than developing the core game.

What do you think should happen next for the Super Smash Bros. franchise following the conclusion of Fighters Pass Vol. 2?
