Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi new frog hero pixel art RPG HD-2D wallpaper quit canceled

It’s hard to stay at the top of your game for decades on end, unless you’re Final Fantasy series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Both parts of his innovative Mistwalker RPG Fantasian launched on Apple Arcade last year to a strong reception from critics and fans (the ones who own an Apple device, anyway). Lately, he’s been resting up by sharing his journey of plowing through Final Fantasy XIV on Twitter, but today he surprised fans with something else. Hironobu Sakaguchi shared an image of art from a “dot-art project” that he “gave up on,” seemingly an RPG with Octopath Traveler-style HD-2D pixel art, and it has a frog as the main character. The image of this aborted pixel art frog hero project has been offered by up Sakaguchi as a computer wallpaper for 2022.

It’s not clear if this was a full-blown video game that Sakaguchi was prototyping in HD-2D or if this was just an odd little art project he picked up as a hobby. What is clear is that he still has a lot of affection for Frog — and apparently Robo too — from Chrono Trigger, another masterpiece he developed while at Square. It’s too bad this random image may be all we ever hear of the project. Still, if Final Fantasy creator and Chrono Trigger designer Hironobu Sakaguchi were to declare to the world that he wanted to make a new pixel art frog hero RPG, I have to imagine someone would be interested in publishing it for him.
