French video game publisher Focus Home Interactive has purchased Dotemu, a company known for developing and/or publishing retro-centric games like Streets of Rage 4 and the upcoming Windjammers 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, and Metal Slug Tactics. Focus Home acquired 77.5% of the share capital of Dotemu for 38.5 million euros, in addition to 15 million euros “conditional on future revenue elements and a second earnout subject to performance criteria.” Coincidentally or not, both companies are based out of Paris.
Focus Home Interactive publishes a wide variety of eclectic titles, like RPG GreedFall, driving sim SnowRunner (which has an unusually excellent Nintendo Switch port), and the upcoming Plague Tale: Requiem (which is getting a cloud version on Switch, in addition to the original). Acquiring Dotemu adds a new, strong retro unit to its catalogue. Focus Home’s expressed intentions with the purchase include mutual sharing of knowledge and resources between it and Dotemu, as well as marketing support for Dotemu from Focus Home. Dotemu will retain its “editorial and strategic independence.” The heads of both publishers are pleased with this purchase arrangement.
“The arrival of Dotemu marks a key step in the acceleration of the Group’s growth and in the diversification of its expertise,” said Christophe Nobileau, Focus Home Interactive CEO. “By enriching our editorial line, we are opening up a new revenue stream and new market shares to conquer in a fast-growing sector.”
Among other things, Dotemu CEO Cyrille Imbert said, “We share the same passion for video games, the same desire to improve, as well as the same values of respect and benevolence towards our partners and teams. While continuing its activities, this new collaboration will allow Dotemu to benefit from the incontestable expertise of Focus Home Interactive’s teams for the production of AA titles and therefore launch the production of future remakes or sequels on licenses of first-generation 3D consoles.”
So basically, the short-story version is Dotemu now has more resources to keep cranking out excellent retro games, which sounds like a good thing.
