If you like to game on the go, you most likely have a Nintendo Switch or Switch Lite. But what if you want to relive gaming’s past with a system that plays retro Nintendo and non-Nintendo titles? The FunKey S is just the thing for you. This miniature console plays games from 12 different video game systems via emulation, with more on the way.
The FunKey S is a cool idea, but I am apprehensive about its size
Funded via Kickstarter in less than 3 hours, the FunKey S utilizes the following consoles at the moment:
- NES
- SNES
- Gameboy
- GBC
- GBA
- Sega Master System
- Genesis (Megadrive)
- Game Gear
- Playstation 1
- Atari Lynx
- WonderSwan
- Neo Geo Pocket
The tiny device has dimensions of 42.5 x 44.5 x 13.8 mm and can fit on a keyring. Also, it automatically suspends gameplay and saves your current state whenever it closes. It will most likely ship this November.
While all of this sounds wonderful, the FunKey S is just way too small, judging by screenshots and videos. Indeed, some games look compressed to fit the aspect ratio, which means certain indicators on a title’s HUD are cut off. Also, the design is heavily influenced by the SNES and GBA SP. While the face buttons make sense for Nintendo games, it’ll be hard to adjust to other consoles’ button layouts.
Enthusiasts, what are your thoughts on the FunKey S? Will it take the world by storm, or will it be hindered by its size and layout? Let us know below.
