A new Pokémon Sword and Shield update video has revealed brand new information about the upcoming games. This included news about Galar’s villainous team, Team Yell, which was announced for the first time today. Another groundbreaking new development came with today’s reveal: the existence of Galarian forms.
It seems Sword and Shield will take a page out of Sun and Moon‘s book with Galarian Pokémon. Much like in Alola, certain species in the Galar region will take on a different appearance and have different characteristics. And amazingly, it looks like Generation 1 Pokémon aren’t the only ones getting regional variants this time around.
Galarian Weezing is a Poison/Fairy-type Pokémon. It sports a uniquely British look, including two top hats that double as smokestacks for purified air. This Pokémon even possesses facial hair made from toxic gas.
Interestingly, Galarian Weezing is quite a bit larger than its counterpart from Kanto. It is 9’10” tall (likely because of the top hat) and weighs 35.3 pounds. Galarian Weezing is known to possess the Levitate Ability. The update video also suggests that this Pokémon has a second Ability, but we do not know what it is.
Breaking the precedent of only Kanto Pokémon receiving regional forms, Hoenn natives Zigzagoon and Linoone will also get Galarian forms. Both Pokémon are Dark/Normal-types. Beyond this, it is unclear what differences exist between the two. They are the same size as their Hoenn counterparts and have the same Abilities as well.
Galarian Zigzagoon is a nomadic species with a love for battling. It is believed to be the oldest variant of the Zigzagoon species. Galarian Linoone can attack at speeds over 60 miles per hour. It is also quite popular among disenchanted teenagers in the Galar region.
Galarian forms and new Pokémon
In addition to the news of Galarian forms, we have learned of brand new Pokémon coming to Sword and Shield. One such Pokémon is Obstagoon, the evolved form of Galarian Linoone. Obstagoon is also a Dark/Normal-type, and it is known as the Blocking Pokémon. It stands at 5’3” tall, weighing 101.4 pounds.
Obstagoon can possess one of two Abilities: Reckless or Guts. It can learn a new move known as Obstruct. The exact effect of the move is unknown. However, it seems to act as a counterattack after Obstagoon prods its opponent into throwing out the first move.
This new update also revealed the resident Pikachu clone of the Galar region. Morpeko is an Electric/Dark-type that is one foot tall and weighs 6.6 pounds. It is known as the Two-Sided Pokémon. As this name suggests, Morpeko has two different forms.
Since the electric sacs in its cheeks constantly consume energy, Morpeko is always hungry. This explains its two different forms: Full Belly Mode and Hangry Mode. Morpeko changes forms every turn because of its Ability, Hunger Switch. The type of its signature move, Aura Wheel, also changes. Full Belly Morpeko’s Aura Wheel is an Electric-type attack, while Hangry Morpeko’s Aura Wheel is Dark-type.
