Pokemon Sword and Shield launch event Tokyo canceled

Oof. Game Freak is really having a rough go of things lately. The development team has been facing around-the-clock criticism for their decision not to include the National Dex in Pokémon Sword and Shield. They had high hopes for these games, and it seems they weren’t prepared for this much backlash. Key developers like Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori have tried to stay positive in interviews, but they’re certainly feeling the heat. It seems we’re now seeing the effects of this. The Pokémon Company has just announced that the bit launch day event in Tokyo has been canceled.

Game Freak’s troubles continue

Game Freak’s Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori were originally planning to attend this event in person. No doubt, they were excited to see their game in the hands of players. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening now, and it’s not exactly clear why.

The backlash from the online community is not mentioned at all in this tweet. Instead, they credit the decision to “operational reasons” with no further details. It’s a peculiarly vague explanation. I would wager it’s not the full story here. But it’s also not good optics for a company like Game Freak to admit they canceled a launch event because of angry or disappointed fans.
