Gigantamax Butterfree

According to the official site for Pokémon Sword and Shield, Gigantamax Butterfree is appearing at a higher frequency for a limited time in Max Raid Battles within each game. The supersized version of the iconic butterfly Pokémon will be a much more common encounter in the games’ Wild Area through “early January 2020.”

It is nice to see continued support for Max Raid Battles, which have four trainers team up to try their luck against a gargantuan adversary. In addition to more Gigantamax Butterfree showdowns, each eighth-gen game has its own Gigantamax Pokémon with an increased encounter rate. Pokémon Sword players will be seeing much more Gigantamax Drednaw, while Pokémon Shield explorers will be butting heads with Gigantamax Corviknight.

Community events like this Gigantamax Butterfree promotion should work as a fun way to keep players coming back to Pokémon Sword and Shield every few months, long after their initial run through the game is complete.

Have you gone up against Gigantamax Butterfree yet? How did it go for you? Who would you like to see in future Max Raid Battle promotions? Are these raids and the Wild Area a good addition to the series, or a fairly significant disappointment for Pokémon Sword and Shield? Let us know in the comments.
