Girl Genius: Adventures in Castle Heterodyne Kickstarter Nintendo Switch Rain Games Phil and Kaja Foglio

Fans of mad scientists, wild monsters, twisted experiments, sentient castles, and high adventure, rejoice! Girl Genius, the award-winning comic and novel series by acclaimed fantasy artists Phil and Kaja Foglio, is finally aiming for a proper video game release with Girl Genius: Adventures in Castle Heterodyne on Kickstarter. Nintendo Switch is a priority for the studio.

Adventures in Castle Heterodyne will follow Agatha Heterodyne (Girl Genius!) as she explores her ancestral home in hopes of fixing its artificial intelligence while fending off its death traps. Developer Rain Games (of Teslagrad fame) intends to make a character-driven 3D action adventure Metroidvania. In addition to platforming, it looks like there will be a mechanic where you’ll be able to collect materials to make new items, like grappling guns, to help stave off the Fun-Sized Mobile Agony and Death Dispensers.

As of the time of this writing, Girl Genius: Adventures in Castle Heterodyne has raised over $51,000 of $200,000 needed with 27 days to go. Stretch goals include new playable characters, voice acting, and versions for PlayStation and Xbox. According to to the developer, however, the Switch version isn’t part of stretch goals because it’s already a priority for them, along with the PC version. Manager Peter Wingaard Meldahl reminds us that “Nintendo approval [is] officially required, though. But we have never had an issue with that before.”

For those who don’t know Girl Genius, it’s a steampunk comic that Studio Foglio releases online. The premise is that the Industrial Revolution is an all-out war, and Europe is ruled by mad scientists or those with the Spark. It follows the adventures of Agatha Heterodyne as she contends with rival inventors, international politics, feline monarchs, and more. The creators of GG are working with a terrific studio, and it looks as though Adventures in Castle Heterodyne will have all the charm and humor of its source material. At the very least, I’m looking forward to seeing Othar Tryggvassen (Gentleman Adventurer!) make his patented chaotic entrance.

Girl Genius: Adventures in Castle Heterodyne is tentatively slated to release in December 2022 per Kickstarter delivery date. A long time to wait, but hey, the fans made it through the original Castle Heterodyne story arc, which was far longer than that.
