Back in 1997, Rare released a game for Nintendo 64 called (*checks notes*) G… GoldenEye 007? Have you heard of that? Anyway, people say it was kind of good. It revolutionized first-person shooters, sold over 8 million units, and basically gave kids and adults across the world a good way to waste several hundred hours. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that GoldenEye 007 influenced a lot of FPS games that came after. But a story is now making the rounds about how the game directly influenced the development of another FPS masterpiece: Half-Life by Valve.
AI and Games recently made a video talking about GoldenEye 007 and why its AI was, for the time, just so darn good. In the midst of that, they highlighted a quote from David Doak, a former Rare developer involved in the creation of GoldenEye and pseudo-sequel Perfect Dark and later TimeSplitters. Doak said in 2018 to GamesRadar, “My favorite moment was meeting the original Valve guys at ECTS, a UK trade show, in 1998 and them joking that GoldenEye had forced them to redo a bunch of stuff on Half-Life. They went on to do all right.” Considering the games share some AI systems in common, the quotation was likely in reference to that.
