GoldenEye 25 is a fan project with the aim of remaking legendary shooter GoldenEye 007 with modern graphics. While the project had been steaming ahead unimpeded for a good while, it seems like the James Bond IP holders finally caught wind of it. In a recent update, the project leads explained to fans that MGM/Danjaq had sent a cease-and-desist letter, so GoldenEye 007 remake development has ended. However, it’s not all doom and gloom.
As you’d expect, the developers went into this project knowing that it might get shut down one day, so they’ve decided to pivot into creating a new video game inspired by ’90s shooters that uses the work they’ve already completed for GoldenEye 25.
In the long run the team is actually quite excited about this change in direction. Now they don’t need to worry about licensing, so they can put the game they eventually finish on Steam and consoles and actually make a profit off of it. This new game is currently called Project Ianus, which you can already follow on Twitter.
One unfortunate part of all this is that every video of GoldenEye 25 must be deleted. That means that there will be little evidence that the project ever existed. If you’re at all interested in seeing a spiritual remake of GoldenEye 007, then keep an eye on Project Ianus.
