Drinkbox Studios is a renown indie developer that brought us indie darlings like the touchscreen slasher Severed and the zany platformer Mutant Blobs Attack. However, it was the original Gaucamelee! that really put the studio on the map. Gamers everywhere fell in love with its blend of wrestling-based melee, precise platforming, and wacky humor. If you love Guacamelee! or have always been interested in playing it, then you’re in luck. Guacamelee! Super Tubo Championship Edition recently hit the Nintendo Switch eShop and it feels right at home on the platform.
Mexican-fiesta wrestling time!
Before I jump into the gameplay specifics, I can’t go without mentioning the game’s fantastic presentation. Guacamelee! is bursting with charm and personality. The game’s Mexican-fiesta setting constantly impresses and changes in style. There are two separate realms that you and switch back and forth between, both equally as pleasing to look at. The game is also written brilliantly, I constantly found myself smiling and chuckling throughout my journey. There are several references to other games and pop-culture that made me laugh out loud.
Progression in Guacamelee! feels extremely satisfying. And every time you’re given a new ability the game throws a bunch of sections you’ll need to utilize said ability. Then there’s the amazing platforming. During areas, you’ll need to precisely time your special moves and maneuvering abilities. You’ll fail, probably a lot. But it’s the moments of solving clever a platforming puzzle that really help Guacamelee! stand out in the Metroidvania genre. Notice how I called it a puzzle? That’s because Guacamelee!‘s platforming is more than simply jumping. You have to use certain attacks on certain enemies, specific jumps at the precise time, and constantly swap between realities in order to succeed. All of that and more is involved, resulting in extremely satisfying gameplay.
During my time with the game, one thing I loved is I never felt clueless on what to do next, which happens to me all the time with Metroidvania titles. The genre specifically isn’t really my cup of tea. In other words, I’ve never really been drawn to a game in the genre in the past. However, after I played Guacamelee!, that quickly changed. For the first time ever I understand exactly what a Metroidvania game is capable of. Aside from the typical ‘get a new item, then go here’ gameplay, the combat is extremely fun, and traversing areas using a time-shifter is a blast. Also, the special moves are kickass wrestling attacks — doesn’t get much better than that!
Rewinding back to 2013: Guacamelee! had me hooked from the second I started playing. The comedy in the game is genius-level and the platforming is damn near perfect. It’s the definition of what a great Metroidvania/platformer is. Fast forward to 2018 and Guacamelee! easily sits among some of the best offerings on Nintendo Switch.
