Handheld only Nintendo Switch to release in 2019 according to analyst

What do you call a Switch that doesn’t… well, switch? We may soon find out. Industry analyst Michael Pachter is a man who loves making gaming predictions. His latest one? Nintendo will release a handheld only version of the Switch.

Speaking with GamingBolt, Pachter gave his predictions for all of the major consoles in 2019. He starts out by saying that all consoles will still sell well, but that they will undergo price cuts sometime this year. That would certainly make sense if we are on the verge of next-generation console announcements.

He then gives his take on Nintendo Switch specifically with the following:

“My guess is that Nintendo will take the Switch and get rid of the ‘Switch’ part, so it’ll be handheld only. They’ll probably just make the Joycons part of the integrated body of the tablet, and probably drop the price. Get rid of the docking station, and the external power supply- just turn the thing into a handheld that’s rechargeable with a power cord, you know, like a normal handheld, and charge $200 for it.”

Handheld only Nintendo Switch to release in 2019 according to analyst

That’s quite the hot take! While it does make sense for Nintendo to explore the notion of a handheld only device spawned from the success of the Switch, it does raise questions. Who is this meant for? Will the performance be better than a current undocked Switch? What will it even be called?

That last question, as silly as it sounds, is quite valid. The Switch name is strong right now, but going handheld only for this proposed model wouldn’t make sense. Perhaps there’s some other feature that could still allow the name to hold bearing? It’s also possible that Nintendo just keeps the name and add a variation to it instead. Switch GO, anyone?

It will be interesting to see what Nintendo has in store on the hardware front in 2019. If they do indeed make a handheld only Switch, then that will likely spell the end of 3DS support. Time will tell.

Would you buy a handheld only Nintendo Switch? What would you want from a new Switch model? Let us know in the comments below!
