Until recently, Nintendo has been rather vague about amiibo functionality in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Thankfully, our sister site Destructoid has done some testing with the other figures, and as a result, we now know what you can expect from the rest of your amiibo collection.
For the most part, amiibo function the same in both Super Mario 3D World and Bowser’s Fury. Any non-special figure will produce a random power-up, such as a star or an extra life. This is perhaps unsurprising, as it’s a standard way to incorporate amiibo into a title. So which amiibo are special? It depends on the game. In Super Mario 3D World, the Cat Mario figure is specially designated to create an invincibility-granting White Cat Suit. On the other hand, the Cat Peach amiibo surprisingly doesn’t have special functionality, being relegated to generating a random power-up like the other figures.
Bowser’s Fury shakes things up a bit though. Cat Mario is reduced to creating a random power-up, while the Bowser and Bowser Jr. figures take top billing as the special ones. When scanning any Bowser figure, Fury Bowser will awaken immediately to rain havoc. Normally, avoiding this hazard is key to your success, but certain obstacles are only breakable by Fury Bowser. Being able to call him at a moment’s notice can be incredibly useful in such cases. Meanwhile, Bowser Jr. figures unleash an explosion, though there is a cooldown in place preventing you from spamming it.
