Last week, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate updated to version 4.0. With the update came not only the highly anticipated arrival of the Hero from Dragon Quest, but some new modes as well for the game’s online. Spectator Mode and Tourney Mode went live with a tease from Masahiro Sakurai about special event tournaments that players can participate in. With that, our first such tournament is coming in hot, as the Japanese Smash Bros. Twitter announced a special-themed tournament for the weekend.

In this special “Heroes vs. Villains” tournament, the tournament will only feature a limited roster of playable fighters. As an incentive, participants can nab some powerful Spirits as prizes by racking up wins. The tourney kicks off on August 9 and will last for three days!

With Splatoon 2 no longer hosting Splatfests, these special Smash Bros. tournaments might just fill that team-based online competitive void. Are you going to test your skills against other players? Following the Heroes vs. Villains tourney, what other special themed tournaments would you want to see in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Personally, I think a tournament between mascots like Mario, Sonic, and Pac-Man would be incredibly fun. Let us know what you think in the comments!
