2020 has been the year of many new norms, but in the games industry it could be known as the showcase year. In the absence of a proper E3, Gamescom, and the like, lots of studios and websites have created their own events instead. The next in that long line is Hi-Rez Studios, who has announced the Hi-Rez Showcase for Jan. 7. The Hi-Rez Showcase centers around an esports tournament, but that’s not all the live event will show off. The developer will share updates on its core roster of free-to-play games, all of which are on Switch. Announcements for the recent shooter Rogue Company, the Overwatch-like Paladins, and the Smite MOBA will all be revealed.
The showcase will take place in a variety of different ways. It will contain keynotes where we expect most of the big reveals, along with panel sessions and of course the tournament itself. There’s a $600,000 prize pool for the Smite World Championship, so this ain’t a small-time tournament.
Hi-Rez hasn’t mentioned anything about revealing a new game, so such a reveal at the showcase seems unlikely. The studio’s portfolio isn’t exactly unique, but the developer delivers accessible multiplayer games that run incredibly well on Nintendo Switch hardware. Paladins and Rogue Company are good fun, and their free-to-play nature makes giving them a go a no-brainer.
The Hi-Rez Showcase takes place Jan. 7, 2021 with the keynote kicking things off at 3:30 p.m. ET.
