PlatinumGames Hideki Kamiya Okami sequel not happening at Capcom, got carried away

Back in October 2019, directors Hideki Kamiya and Ikumi Nakamura posted a video on Twitter at the PlatinumGames studio, where Kamiya declared, “Okami is going to be back,” to which Nakamura said, “Really?” and Kamiya replied, “Really.” Thus, the world rejoiced that somehow, some way, it appeared that Kamiya and Nakamura were working with IP owner Capcom to create an Okami sequel. However, a recent interview with PlatinumGames producer Atsushi Inaba and designer Kamiya has Kamiya admitting that no such game is currently in development. He would just really like to make the game.

Siliconera further elaborates on this, pointing to a piece of conversation that the video does not make explicit:

Atsushi Inaba, sitting besides Kamiya, immediately told Kamiya while laughing, “Hey, take responsibility for making a statement like that.” Kamiya replied with a wry smile, saying, “I’m not sure how to respond to this…”, and Inaba provided some context by saying to Kamiya, “You really got too carried away that time. Why not just say that you’ve always wanted to make one?”

If you’ve been holding out hope that a PlatinumGames X Capcom collaboration was on the books to make an Okami sequel, well, you’ll just have to wait a little longer. Never say never though.

In the meantime, Platinum is working on Bayonetta 3, Project G.G., and Babylon’s Fall. Nintendo Enthusiast recently conducted its own lengthy and insightful interview with PlatinumGames, where they talk about their desire to create Viewtiful Joe 3. Between that title and Okami, let’s hope Platinum and Capcom can get on very friendly terms soon.
