Hironobu Sakaguchi talks about the recurring Final Fantasy character Cid

It’s always a treat to hear from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, who is currently the head of his own company Mistwalker, and the father of FF recently talked about recurring series character Cid and how it all started.

The discussion about Cid comes from an extended cut of a Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster interview featuring Hironobu Sakaguchi and Final Fantasy brand manager Yoshinori Kitase. The hosts are composer Kenichi Maeyamada (a.k.a Hyadain) and announcer Chiaki Matsuzawa.

Here are our translated transcripts highlighted from the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster interview, where Sakaguchi talks about Cid and his love for old man characters:

Final Fantasy Tidbits: A Man Named Cid

Hyadain: “That’s right, I have a question. Sakaguchi-san, you previously mentioned that each title takes place in its own universe. However, I believe there is always one character named Cid who reappears named Cid.”

Hironobu Sakaguchi: “Ah, yes, yes.”

Hyadain: “Furthermore, his role is, how should I put it, it always has something to do with machinery and such.”

Chiaki Matsuzawa: “Right, like an engineer in each series.”

Hyadain: “And in Final Fantasy IV, he even joins in on the battles. Were the Cids connected in some way or another?”

Hironobu Sakaguchi: “Er, not really in particular [laughs].”

Hyadain: “Really?! Nothing?”

Hironobu Sakaguchi: “Well, no, he just kept appearing in the games, so we just decided that it was about time to throw him into battles [laughs]. Surprisingly, that’s all it was.”

Hyadain: “Before the Dark Elf fight, you had a party consisting of Yang, Cid, Tellah, and the protagonist. A party full of old men.”

Hironobu Sakaguchi: “Ah, right, yeah. I always liked old guys.”

Chiaki Matsuzawa: “That explains why all the old men in Final Fantasy games are loveable or wonderful.”

Hironobu Sakaguchi: “That’s right. In Final Fantasy I, there are these sages. There was a part that had twelve or eight of them appear in a circle. That’s my favorite part of all time. I just like old guys [laughs].”

Chiaki Matsuzawa: “Even when you look at characters like Ramuh, you get a sense of love for old men or something like that.”

Hyadain: “Now that you mention it, there are a lot of old dudes.”

Hironobu Sakaguchi: “Yes, there are. People complained about them, the old man parties.”

Hyadain: “Really? I loved them.”

Hironobu Sakaguchi: “Is that so? It was just a minor thing [laughs].”

Thanks to the fondness of Hironobu Sakaguchi for old people, Cid has lived on as a staple of Final Fantasy, as he should. For more FF series news, Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster will launch on November 10 on PC and mobile, and kart racer Chocobo GP is on the way to Nintendo Switch exclusively in 2022.
