Ho-oh 4-star photo guide for New Pokémon Snap

My favorite Legendary bird from Pokémon Gold and Silver, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Ho-Oh can be found in New Pokémon Snap. Much as with the other Legendary and Mythical Pokémon though, you’ll have to beat the game first. And much like Celebi, Ho-oh is rather easy to find if you know where to look, though getting those high-star encounters requires a bit more work. If you’re struggling to find the Rainbow Pokémon, our New Pokémon Snap guide will show you where to look, as well as how to grab that 4-star Ho-Oh photo!

Head to Volcano Level 2, and when you get to the second open area, do a 180 and look towards the top of the corridor you just came from. It might take a few moments, but as long as you’re looking at the sky in that general direction, you should see Ho-Oh flying around, reminiscent of its first appearance in the Pokémon anime. Take a photo here for its 1-star picture and to continue the encounter!

Once you have the picture, turn back around and take the right-hand alternate path towards the blue magma chamber. Ignore the first room, then turn to the left as you’re crossing the strip leading into the blue magma room. For further clarity, this is the room with the big crater to the right. If you’ve done things correctly, you should see a Rainbow Wing on the wall. Hit it with an Illumina Orb and proceed into next room.

Immediately upon entering the blue magma room, from straight forward, turn slightly right and you’ll see a sleeping Torkoal. Hit it with an Illumina Orb to wake it up. As it moves away, you should see a second Rainbow Wing on the ground where it used to lay. You can also hit this one from the side once you’ve passed the Torkoal, provided you weren’t able to wake it up. Lastly, from straight forward, turn left, towards the Charmander. You should see the third and final Rainbow Wing on the wall, just past the first magma waterfall.

As you proceed into the final chamber, you’ll encounter Ho-oh again, though its behavior is dependent on how many Rainbow Wings you hit. If you hit two of the three, Ho-Oh will rise from the center of the volcano, affording you the 2-star photo opportunity. However, if you hit all three Rainbow Wings, Ho-Oh will descend into the volcano from above, let out a roar, then proceed to fly in a circular pattern around the room. You’ll have to catch Ho-Oh mid-roar for the 4-star photo.

There are nine other Legendary and Mythical Pokémon to find in New Pokémon Snap, so if you’re having trouble with those, be sure to check out our other guides!
