We’re all very excited about the upcoming release of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Nintendo’s launch trailer for the highly anticipated prequel to 2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild hits all the right notes ahead of its release later this week. Although the trailer doesn’t show us anything new per se, it does an excellent job at preserving the hype. The music throughout screams “Zelda,” especially at the end with the brief nod to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
As the launch trailer reflects, Age of Calamity takes place 100 years before the events of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The events of the game will demonstrate never-before-seen moments in Breath of the Wild’s lore and allow us to play as a variety of characters in Koei Tecmo Warriors-style combat. It is recommended that you at least be somewhat familiar with Breath of the Wild’s story to fully enjoy the whole experience on offer here, but since it’s a prequel, it can still be a good point from which to jump into the saga.
Explore open battlefields to defeat hordes of Calamity Ganon’s army as you try and stop the impending destruction. The gameplay also takes inspiration from Breath of the Wild, implementing similar mechanics such as cooking, shield surfing, and much more.
One of Breath of the Wild’s biggest weaknesses was its story not going too in-depth with its world and characters, and this new title seems like it will rectify that. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is shaping up to be a worthy prequel to the amazing open-world adventure, and we’ll find out for sure on Nov. 20.
