I got a chance to play a bit of Age of Calamity last night with one of my fellow writers, Dominick Ashtear. It’s a lot of fun, especially controlling the Champions (Urbosa being the best, don’t fight me on this). While gaming, I wondered if there would be any more titles in the Hyrule Warriors series one day. Unfortunately, that doesn’t look like it is the cards at the moment, according to Nintendo and Koei Tecmo producers.
I’d buy another Hyrule Warriors game in a heartbeat
Responding to a question from IGN about whether or not a standalone Hyrule Warriors series is in the works, Zelda series producer, Eiji Aonuma, had this to say:
I do think circumstances could align like this again, but I don’t think we’re expecting this to become a series. We’d make that decision based on its creative merits, just like we did this time.
Age of Calamity producer, Yosuke Hayashi, added:
I think it depends on whether we get an idea that’ll make all the fans happy!
A little disappointing, but at least the possibility is alive and well. Personally, I’d love to see a title more epic in scope than the original Hyrule Warriors. Bring every timeline together in one grand event. And yes, I’m including Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland.
A brilliant idea that bore fruit
So how did Age of Calamity even come about? According to Aonuma, it was all thanks to Breath of the Wild‘s director:
It was Fujibayashi-san, the director of [Breath of the Wild], who initially came up with the concept. Fujibayashi-san thought that telling the untold story of the Great Calamity from BotW would only be possible with a system like Warriors where players could come together to fight against vast armies, so he put together a project proposal and sent it to me. His enthusiasm for the project pushed me to consult with Hayashi-san.
Thank goodness for that. At present, I’m really enjoying the story in Age of Calamity, so I’m glad this idea wasn’t left on the cutting room floor.
