It’s been a while since we saw our last amiibo figure. Dark Samus and Richter hit shelves on Jan. 17, and that finished up the last of the non-DLC Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters. We knew that the first of the DLC fighters would be appearing later this year, but now we know for sure when. Joker and Hero will grace our shelves on Oct. 2. Additionally, Joker and Hero amiibo are already available for preorder at Best Buy.

Nintendo’s official Twitter account posted a glamorous teaser for these two amiibo figures. Joker, due to his lithe frame and extra bits, needs a bit of reinforcement, which comes in the form of blue flames. With the stylish trench coat, stark red gloves, and roguish grin, this is one of the most exquisite figures to date. Hero… has nice boots.
This is one of the longer gaps between amiibo releases that we’ve seen, but certainly not the longest. For comparison, during the Smash 4 run, Roy and Ryu were released on March 18, 2016. Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta, along with their Player 2 alternates, came out almost a year and a half later, on July 21, 2017. There were other, non-Smash figures released during that gap, but none this year since Dark Samus and Richter.
Amiibo certainly aren’t getting pumped out like they were before. Animal Crossing cards are being reprinted for New Horizons, but there’s no word on a new set. I’ve always felt that Pokémon would be an amazing fit for the technology as well. For better or for worse, I don’t see the upcoming figures reigniting the craze, but for collectors and fans, it’s a sign that things are still going well over in the world of Smash development, despite everything else happening in the world. Let’s just hope Terry, Banjo & Kazooie, Byleth, Min Min, and the rest aren’t too far behind.
Will you preorder Joker and/or Hero?
