Nintendo Switch native version possible undecided Kingdom Hearts Ichiro Hazama Square Enix 1.5 + 2.5 HD remix

When the titanic news finally arrived that Sora from Kingdom Hearts will be joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo and Square Enix also announced that the Kingdom Hearts series will be coming to Switch. Specifically, cloud streaming versions of Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III are all coming to Switch, with the option to buy them in a bundle called Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece for Cloud. However, Nintendo Life spoke with Kingdom Hearts series producer Ichiro Hazama, and he said the possibility still exists for at least Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix to receive a native, non-cloud release on Nintendo Switch, though the matter is “undecided.”

Here is the relevant Q&A:

NL: We understand it would have been near impossible to get the entire series running smoothly on Switch, but is it possible that Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix could ever be reworked to run natively on Switch later down the road? Is this just sort of a stop gap?

Hazama: “At this moment in time, the production of a native version is undecided. We believe that the Cloud version is currently the best way to deliver the Kingdom Hearts series to Nintendo Switch players, but we are always excited to hear to feedback from our fans and want to thank them for all their support.”

With the cloud versions all coming, it is surprising to hear that Hazama and Square Enix are still entertaining the possibility of a native Nintendo Switch version of Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix at all, though it is possible that “undecided” is just PR speak for “nah.” Hazama stated in the interview that series creator Tetsuya Nomura explored how to get the Kingdom Hearts series running on Switch natively in the past but ran into technical challenges like storage capacity issues. This agrees with what Nomura told us ourselves at Nintendo Enthusiast last year.

What do you think of the likelihood of a native, no-cloud Nintendo Switch version of Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix or other series titles?
