The Lego Super Mario sets, first announced last month, are releasing this August 1. The interactive building block toys take Mario to a whole new level — one you can make yourself in real life.
Akin to other Lego sets, there will be a large Starter Course with expansions to supplement it. The starter set comes with everything needed to play though, including a Mario figure with a speaker and LED eyes, mouth, and belly. There are also seven “action bricks” that are only available in this set.
Aimed at children aged six and older, Lego Super Mario lets fans build their own Mario levels out of Lego bricks and clash against classic enemies like Bowser Jr. Future expansions will include the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set and the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set, allowing you to face off against the King of the Koopas himself. There’s also a mode that lets you play with or against your friends, collecting virtual coins, racing to the goal, and more.
According to Takashi Tezuka, Executive Officer and Game Producer of Nintendo Co., Ltd., the Lego crossover will make Mario “a real friend to children” and spur their imaginations along the path to making their own, real-life Mario levels. I imagine that this is a product that will inspire many Super Mario Maker levels in the future and wonder if this weren’t meant to be a step-up product into the level creator series.
Finally, there will be a companion app that will include scoreboards and visual instructions for suggested level designs, and it will generally provide a child-safe forum to share ideas with friends. The Lego Super Mario Starter Course and two expansions should be available for preorder soon, if not immediately. The Starter Course retails for $59.99, the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set for $29.99, and the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set for $99.99.
