Capcom 2002 Shantae re-release Game Boy Color Nintendo Switch WayForward Limited Run Games rerelease physical version

Limited Run Games wasn’t going to let a global pandemic keep it from announcing physical game releases. The crew at LRG went to the effort of holding this year’s presentation from an extradimensional auditorium in a reality where E3 wasn’t canceled. And boy did it kick off with a bang, announcing the return of Shantae for the Game Boy Color. Literally, they’re reprinting the Game Boy Color cart. They’re also putting out a version for the Switch, which only makes sense in this day and age.

In the presentation, the beloved producers of physical media talk about re-releasing 2002’s Shantae for the old handheld. This is exciting as the original publisher, Capcom, has never ported the cult classic to any system after the initial launch. Limited Run Games partnered with WayForward to work out the details behind this near-miraculous release.

As a side note, when Josh Fairhurst from Limited Run Games said, “I’m excited to reveal that you’ll no longer have to pay $400 for an official Shantae cartridge on the Game Boy Color,” he was actually understating the price. At the time of this writing, an original cart can sell for over $500, with boxed copies selling in the thousands. This re-release will allow so many fans of the series to legally play the first game in this beloved series.

Oh, also, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut is getting a physical release on Switch too! You will be able to play the whole franchise on Nintendo Switch.

Between this tribute to the past, and a 3D game and animated series in consideration, it’s a great time to be a Shantae fan.
